It spans an area of 2,893 hectares within the municipality of Acquapendente, ranging from the 774 metres of the "Greppe della Maddalena" to the 235 metres of the Paglia River, at the border with Umbria and Tuscany.Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve is a place of significant historical and cultural interest, rich in natural resources and traditions. Scattered across the reserve are numerous farmhouses, once inhabited by farmers, which testify to the area's agricultural heritage. Some of these buildings have been restored and now host museums, environmental education centres and accommodation facilities. Notable among them are the Museum of Rural Traditions and the Museum of Flowers, which offer visitors a unique opportunity to discover the local history and culture.
The terrain of this area features gentle slopes, primarily composed of sedimentary rock. It is marked by significant landslides and a dense network of streams.For nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, the reserve offers numerous hiking trails that allow visitors to explore diverse natural environments and enjoy breathtaking views. Moreover, the Astronomical Observatory, situated in a privileged position away from city lights, offers the chance to observe the night sky in all its splendour.
The reserve’s flora is diverse and includes rare or extremely rare species, often associated with open spaces and wetland environments. The fauna is equally varied, with rare species such as wolf and freshwater turtle, which find refuge and reproduce in this area but are difficult to spot.Outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and horseback riding are plentiful, with various trails that offer the opportunity to explore the natural and historical beauty of the area.
