Rural life was deeply influenced by natural cycles and religious traditions, which marked time and provided moments of socialization and reflection. Peasant families were large, with children seen as valuable resources for working in the fields.
Religious festivals were important occasions for a break from daily toil, offering peasants moments of gathering and celebration. During these events, work clothes were replaced with carefully preserved festive attire. Religious sentiment was profound, permeating every aspect of daily life and often intertwined with superstition.Winter evenings were spent with the family gathered around the fire, with women spinning yarn and men repairing farming tools. The Rosary was recited and stories were told, some sacred and others linked to legends of witches and fear. Life was simple and slow-paced but serene, with modest needs and strong community bonds.
Agricultural and forestry work, though arduous and often exhausting, was accompanied by a sense of solidarity and shared effort. Traditions tied to farming, such as threshing, were reasons to celebrate, with housewives preparing feasts to mark the end of the harvest. The lighting of fires on the eve of major religious feasts was another moment of unity and devotion, with farmers illuminating the horizon in a display of faith.
Today, most of these traditions have disappeared or greatly changed, having been replaced by modern practices. However, the memory of these ancient customs remains alive, bearing witness to a culture rich in values and stories that deserve to be preserved and shared. The village of Trevinano, with its ancient charm and atmosphere suspended in time, comes alive throughout the year with a series of festivals and traditions that reflect the soul of its community. These events, which combine the sacred and the profane, are an opportunity to rediscover the deep roots of the village and be involved in a world of devotion, conviviality and authentic ties.
One of the most heartfelt events is the Festa della Madonna della Quercia, held on the third Sunday after Easter. The people of Trevinano, who are deeply devoted to their protector, gather for an evocative procession that crosses the village, accompanied by the solemn notes of the band, to reach the church dedicated to Her just outside the village. This moment of collective recollection represents an indissoluble bond between the community and their spiritual tradition, uniting generations as a sign of faith.
On 10 August, Trevinano celebrates its patron saint, San Lorenzo Martire, with a festival that brings an atmosphere of solemnity and joy to the streets of the village. The statue of the Saint, venerated with profound devotion, is carried in a procession through the streets of the village, followed by the band that accompanies the worshippers. The day ends with the community sharing refreshments, strengthening the bond between inhabitants and visitors.
However, they also know how to have a good time in Trevinano and the lively Sagra della Rosticciana, held at the first weekend of August is proof of this. This event, organised by the local Pro-Loco association, transforms the streets of the village into a huge open-air festival, where the inviting aroma of grilled meat mingles with music and traditional dancing. It is a perfect opportunity to savour the genuine flavours of the local cuisine and to experience the warm hospitality of the locals.
There is also sport, which blends perfectly with the unspoilt nature that surrounds the village. For over thirty years, the Scarpinata di Monte Rufeno has been attracting trekking enthusiasts and nature lovers for a non-competitive walk through the splendid Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve. The route is a loop which starts and ends in Trevinano, offering participants the opportunity to explore breathtaking landscapes and to enjoy final refreshments that taste of tradition and community, together with a gadget as a souvenir that seals the experience.
At each festival and in every tradition, Trevinano reveals its authentic spirit, a village that although small, proudly preserves its history and customs, inviting everyone to be part of the experience.
