3 Minutes of reading

Allerona is a charming village located in the province of Terni, Umbria, renowned for its scenic beauty and rich historical and cultural heritage

This small municipality, listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”, sits at an altitude of 472 metres above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Umbrian and Tuscan hills. Allerona is divided into two main areas: Allerona Alta, the historic village perched on the hill and Allerona Scalo, the more modern and populated part.
The history of Allerona dates back to the Etruscan era, with subsequent developments under Roman rule. During the Middle Ages, the village became a feudal castle, which was later destroyed by Charles V at the end of the 15th century. The castle was eventually rebuilt and the village came under the control of the Papal States until the unification of the Kingdom of Italy.

Allerona

The historic centre of Allerona is characterized by a maze of narrow alleys and streets leading to picturesque squares and historic buildings. Among its main landmarks are the Church of Santa Maria della Stella, built in the 12th century and renovated in the late 19th century and the Visconteo Palace, constructed in the 14th century by the Monaldeschi family. Both the church and palace are located in the highest part of the village, in Piazza Santa Maria, where the castle once stood.
Allerona is also famous for its production of wine and olive oil, thanks to the fertile soil of the surrounding hills. The village is nestled within S.T.I.N.A. Nature Park (Monte Peglia and Selva di Meana Park), a protected area that offers numerous opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities.

The proximity of Allerona to Trevinano Trivium, a crossroads connecting Allerona to Trevinano and other nearby locations, is particularly noteworthy. This trivium has historically served as a strategic link between the three regions, facilitating trade and cultural exchange.
The road connecting Allerona to Trevinano winds through a stunning hilly landscape, featuring vineyards, olive groves and forests. Along the way, visitors can admire ancient farmhouses and small villages that preserve their rural charm. This proximity to Trevinano makes Allerona an ideal starting point for exploring the natural and historical beauty of the surrounding regions.
