Sanctuary of Madonna della Quercia

3 Minutes of reading

The Church of Madonna della Quercia in Trevinano is a small, modest rural structure located just over a kilometre south of the village, along the provincial road connecting the Cassia highway to Trevinano and San Casciano dei Bagni.

Built towards the end of the 17th century, the church stands out for its simplicity and architectural harmony, surrounded by a brick portico supported by pillars and rounded arches. Its structure is completed by three semicircular apses at the rear.
The faҫade, with its original terracotta from 1721, is surmounted by a tympanum adorned with a wrought-iron cross, a replica of the monumental cross on Monte Amiata. A small bell gable houses two bells, the larger of which dates back to 1744, while the smaller bears an inscription from 1211. The church’s interior is equally simple and harmonious, measuring 20 metres in length and 6 metres in width. The vaulted ceiling is supported by three arches resting on pilasters attached to the walls, while three additional arches frame the two side apses and the rear one.

Chiesa della Madonna della Quercia

The central altar, a Baroque masterpiece in plaster, is uniquely shaped like an oak tree, adorned with cherubs and crowned by a royal crown. At the center of the altar is a niche housing a small terracotta painting of the Madonna and Child, which has been venerated for over three centuries.
Behind the altar, partially Baroque in style, two doors reveal the trunk of the ancient oak associated with the church's miraculous tradition. The Sanctuary of Madonna della Quercia was in fact erected in perpetual memory of the miraculous event recorded in a manuscript from 1782, in which a small terracotta painting of the Madonna appeared on the branches of a centuries-old oak tree.
In 1963, thanks to the efforts of local residents, the church was restored. Today, it can be admired from the road, with its elegant portico leading to the faҫade. Surrounded by a small park nestled in greenery, the Church of Madonna della Quercia is a place of peace and prayer, where the simplicity of the structure and popular devotion create an atmosphere of spiritual reflection.
